Destruction of Black Civilization: Great Issues of a Race from 4500 B.C. to 2000 A.D. The Destruction of Black Civilization took Chancellor Williams 16 years of research and field study to compile. The book, which was to serve as a reinterpretation of the history of the African race, was intended to be "a general rebellion against the subtle message from even the most liberal white authors and their Negro disciples: "You belong to a race of nobodies. You have no worthwhile history to point to with pride." The book was written at a time when many black students, educators, and scholars were starting to piece together the connection between the way their history was taught and the way they were perceived by others and by themselves. They began to question assumptions made about their history and took it upon themselves to create a new body of historical research.  The book is premised on the question: If the Blacks were among the very first builders of civil...

Please, man,” Floyd said when officers approached as he sat in his car. One officer had a gun drawn and aimed at Floyd’s head.  “I just lost my mom, man, ” Floyd said in the bodycam footage. “ Please don’t shoot me, Mr. Officer, please.”  Floyd also apologized throughout the video as the pigs cursed him with profanity.  “ Put your fucking hand up there, ” one pig ordered. “ Jesus Christ, keep your fucking hands on the wheel.” When the police attempted to put Floyd in the back of a police vehicle, Floyd  told them that he was claustrophobic.  Floyd was then forced to the ground. It was then that then-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin shoved a knee into his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds as Floyd cried out: “ I can’t breathe .” Witnesses begged other police officers a...

"From the far reaches of the Mediterranean Sea to the Indus River, the faithful approached the city of Mecca. Mansa Musa had prepared carefully for the long journey he and his attendants would take. He was determined to travel not only for his own religious fulfillment but also for recruiting teachers and leaders, so that his realms could learn more of the Prophet's teachings.” (Mahmud Kati, Chronicle of the Seeker) Recent research has revealed that the richest person of all time lived in the 14th century in West Africa and went by many names, including Kankan Musa Keita, Emir of Melle, Lord of the Mines of Wangara, Conqueror of Ghanata, and the Lion of Mali II, but today he is usually referred to as Mansa Musa. Adjusting his wealth to modern values, he was worth about an estimated $400 billion as the S...

Book of the Day "They Came Before Columbus"

Image
They Came Before Columbus: The African Presence in Ancient America (Journal of African Civilizations) They Came Before Columbus reveals a compelling, dramatic, and superbly detailed documentation of the presence and legacy of Africans in ancient America. Examining navigation and shipbuilding; cultural analogies between Native Americans and Africans; the transportation of plants, animals, and textiles between the continents; and the diaries, journals, and oral accounts of the explorers themselves, Ivan Van Sertima builds a pyramid of evidence to support his claim of an African presence in the New World centuries before Columbus. Combining impressive scholarship with a novelist’s gift for storytelling, Van Sertima re-creates some of the most powerful scenes of human history: the launching of the great ships of Mali in 1310 (two hundred master boats and two hundred supply boats), the sea expedition of the Mandingo king in 1311, and many others. In They Came Before Columbus , ...

The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States

Image
This book , from 1843, is an extended exhortation urging white ministers and slaveowners to attend to the spiritual needs of slaves and free blacks.   The book is broken into four parts. The first part is an historical sketch of slavery in the Colonies and the United States, with a focus on missionary and religious efforts directed towards the African slaves. This account goes from 1620 to 1842. Jones closes this first part with a summary of each denomination and each state.  The second part treats the "Moral and Religious Condition" of slaves and free blacks, blaming their circumstances for their lack of virtue. Jones especially calls attention to their poverty and lack of education. He describes their ignorance of Christianity, their general lack of character, and their prevailing vices, noting that in the end, they are totally dependent on white men for the ability to overcome these limitations.  In light of this description, Jones goes on in the t...

"The New York Times best-selling book exploring the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged and how these reactions maintain racial inequality."   White Fragility is a "vital, necessary, and beautiful book," Michael Eric Dyson.  Anti-racist educator Robin DiAngelo shines a light on white fragility and "allows us to understand racism as a practice not exclusive to "bad people."   Referring to the, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation, silence, and other defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially. These behaviors, in turn, prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue.    In this in-depth exploration, the author examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively. Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood

Image
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical. Noah’s virtuoso embodiment of all the characters from his childhood, and his ability to perform accents and dialects effortlessly in English, Xhosa, and Zulu, garnered the Audie Award for Best Male Narrator in 2018. Nevertheless, Noah’s devoted and uncompromising mother—as voiced by her son—steals the show.  Listen to FREE Audio Book Order Paperback/Hardcover    Facebook @ KweliKush      IG @ KweliKush      Twitter @ RoyalKweli      Pinterest @ KweliKush      Become a Patron!     Try Audible and Get Two Free Audiobooks

Selected Writings and Speeches of Marcus Garvey

Image
One of the most important and controversial figures in the history of race relations in America and the world at large, Marcus Garvey was the first great black orator of the 20th century. The Jamaican-born African American rights advocated dismayed his enemies as much as he dazzled his admirers. Of him, Martin Luther King, Jr., said, “He was the first man, on a mass scale and level, to give millions of Negroes a sense of dignity and destiny, and make the Negro feel that he was somebody.” A printer and newspaper editor in his youth, Garvey furthered his education in England and eventually traveled to the United States, where he impressed thousands with his speeches and millions more through his newspaper articles. His message of black pride resonated in all his efforts. This anthology contains some of his most noted writings, among them “The Negro’s Greatest Enemy”, "Declaration of the Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World", and "Africa for the Africans", as well ...
