FREE Audio Book of the Day "God - The Failed Hypothesis: How Science Shows That God Does Not Exist"

Image
Throughout history, arguments for and against the existence of God have been largely confined to philosophy and theology, while science has sat on the sidelines.   Despite the fact that science has revolutionized every aspect of human life and greatly clarified our understanding of the world, somehow the notion has arisen that it has nothing to say about the possibility of a supreme being, which much of humanity worships as the source of all reality.  This book contends that, if God exists, some evidence for this existence should be detectable by scientific means, especially considering the central role that God is alleged to play in the operation of the universe and the lives of humans.   Treating the traditional God concept, as conventionally presented in the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions, like any other scientific hypothesis, physicist Stenger examines all of the claims made for God's existence.   He considers the latest Intelligent Design arg...

Book of the Day, "Black Freethinkers: A History of African American Secularism (Critical Insurgencies)"

Image
Black Freethinkers: A History of African American Secularism (Critical Insurgencies) Black Freethinkers argues that, contrary to historical and popular depictions of African Americans as naturally religious, free thought has been central to black political and intellectual life from the nineteenth century to the present. Free thought encompasses many different schools of thought, including atheism, agnosticism, and nontraditional orientations such as deism and paganism. Christopher Cameron suggests an alternative origin of nonbelief and religious skepticism in America, namely the brutality of the institution of slavery. He also traces the growth of atheism and agnosticism among African Americans in two major political and intellectual movements of the 1920s: the New Negro Renaissance and the growth of black socialism and communism. In a final chapter, he explores the critical importance of free thought among participants in the civil rights and Black Power movements of the 1960...

The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States

Image
This book , from 1843, is an extended exhortation urging white ministers and slaveowners to attend to the spiritual needs of slaves and free blacks.   The book is broken into four parts. The first part is an historical sketch of slavery in the Colonies and the United States, with a focus on missionary and religious efforts directed towards the African slaves. This account goes from 1620 to 1842. Jones closes this first part with a summary of each denomination and each state.  The second part treats the "Moral and Religious Condition" of slaves and free blacks, blaming their circumstances for their lack of virtue. Jones especially calls attention to their poverty and lack of education. He describes their ignorance of Christianity, their general lack of character, and their prevailing vices, noting that in the end, they are totally dependent on white men for the ability to overcome these limitations.  In light of this description, Jones goes on in the t...
