Book of the Day "Not the Impossible Faith"

Image
Not the Impossible Faith is a tour de force in that genre, dissecting and refuting the oft-repeated claim that Christianity could not have succeeded in the ancient world unless it was true. Though framed as a detailed rebuttal to Christian apologist J.P. Holding (author of The Impossible Faith), Carrier takes a general approach that educates the listener on the history and sociology of the ancient world, answering many questions like: How did Christians approach evidence? Was there a widespread prejudice against the testimony of women? Was resurrection such a radical idea? Who would worship a crucified criminal? And much more.    Written with occasional humor and an easy style, and thoroughly referenced, with many entertaining "gotcha!" moments, Not the Impossible Faith is a must-listen for anyone interested in the origins of Christianity. Richard Carrier, PhD, is an expert in the history of the ancient world and a critic of Christian attempts to distort history...

Book of the Day "Faith vs Fact: Why Science and Religion Are Incompatible"

Image
In his provocative book, evolutionary biologist Jerry A. Coyne lays out in clear, dispassionate detail why the toolkit of science, based on reason and empirical study, is reliable, while that of religion - including faith, dogma, and revelation - leads to incorrect, untestable, or conflicting conclusions. Coyne is responding to a national climate in which over half of Americans don't believe in evolution (and congressmen deny global warming), and warns that religious prejudices and strictures in politics, education, medicine, and social policy are on the rise.    Extending the best-selling works of Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and Christopher Hitchens, he demolishes the claims of religion to provide verifiable "truth" by subjecting those claims to the same tests we use to establish truth in science. Coyne irrefutably demonstrates the grave harm - to individuals and to our planet - in mistaking faith for fact in making the most important decisions about the world w...

Book of the Day "Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams"

Image
Leading scientific expert - Professor Matthew Walker, director of UC Berkeley's Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab - reveals his groundbreaking exploration of sleep, explaining how we can harness its transformative power to change our lives for the better.  Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.  But an explosion of scientific discoveries in the last 20 years has shed new light on this fundamental aspect of our lives. Now, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert Matthew Walker gives us a new understanding of the vital importance of sleep and dreaming. Among so many other things, within the brain, sleep enriches our abili...

NYC Mayor Threatens to Permanently Shut Down Churches for Not Complying with Social Distancing

Image
The orthodox jews of New York have long enjoyed having politicians at their mercy and whim, but due to COVID-19, things have changed... At least for now. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is having none of the usual "blind eye turning" and wrist slapping! He's speaking out against synagogues who have remained open despite requests to close in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.   While the majority of synagogues have closed in accordance with city orders, others have stayed open. De Blasio warned the Jewish community that synagogues that continue to defy coronavirus regulations and hold services may be permanently shut down.   “We’ve had extraordinary, across the board, rabbinical support from all the different elements of the Jewish community. A small number of religious communities, specific churches, specific synagogues are unfortunately not paying attention to this guidance, even though it’s been so widespread.”   It was also stated that  police ...

Book of the Day "The God Virus"

Image
What makes religion so powerful? How does it weave its way into our political system? Why do people believe and follow obvious religious charlatans? What makes people profess deep faith even as they act in ways that betray that faith? What makes people blind to the irrationalities of their religion yet they clearly see those of others?    If these questions interest you, this book will give you the tools to understand religion and its power in you, your family and your culture.    For thousands of years, religion has woven its way through societies and people as if it were part and parcel to that society or person. In large measure it was left unexplained and unchallenged, it simply existed. Those who attempted to challenge and expose religion were often persecuted, excommunicated, shunned, or even executed. It could be fatal to explain that which the church, priest, or imam said was unexplainable. Before the germ, viral, and parasite theory of dis...

Germ Warfare? Are Whites Purposely Spreading Corona-Virus to Blacks???

Image
According to federal law enforcement, white supremacist groups have been caught discussing plans to intentionally infect Black Americans with coronavirus. ‘White Racially Motivated Violent Extremists have recently commented on the coronavirus stating that it is an “OBLIGATION” to spread it should any of them contract the virus.’     The chatter involved spreading coronavirus by leaving ‘saliva on door handles’ at local FBI offices, spitting on elevator buttons and spreading germs in ‘nonwhite neighborhoods,’ according to the document. Authorities said neo-Nazis have been discussing coronavirus 'bioterrorism'  Federal agencies monitored chat app Telegram said to be used by extremists  White supremacists allegedly discussed 'weaponizing' the coronavirus Plans allegedly included leaving saliva on doorknobs of FBI local offices Federal investigators said these plans were being discussed as early as February. Book of the Day "The God Argument"

Image
What are the arguments for and against religion and religious belief--all of them--right across the range of reasons and motives that people have for being religious, and do they stand up to scrutiny? Can there be a clear, full statement of these arguments that once and for all will show what is at stake in this debate?    Equally important: what is the alternative to religion as a view of the world and a foundation for morality? Is there a worldview and a code of life for thoughtful people--those who wish to live with intellectual integrity, based on reason, evidence, and a desire to do and be good--that does not interfere with people's right to their own beliefs and freedom of expression?    In The Case Against Religion , Anthony Grayling offers a definitive examination of these questions, and an in-depth exploration of the humanist outlook that recommends itself as the ethics of the genuinely reflective person. Middle School Refuses to Punish Racist Students for Bullying Black Girl

Image
Missouri Mom Outraged After 14-Year-Old Daughter Singled Out As Subject Of Racist Meme    A Missouri mother is beside herself after her 14 year-old daughter was the target of a racist meme, sent to her and other students at the lunch table.    The meme in question shows a white man hosing a young Black child with water, with a caption that reads, “Go be a ni**er somewhere else."  The offensive picture was reportedly airdropped to two students at Hixson Middle School in Webster Groves.   Yolanda Morris wants disciplinary action after her daughter showed the meme to her. Morris was reduced to tears.   “I immediately started crying and started emailing,” Morris said. “I’ve been crying on and off all day, all night. Every time I see the picture, I just immediately start crying because I can’t believe someone would think that was okay to send to my daughter.”    Morris, along with Jada’s father attended a closed-door meeting with Princ...

Book of the Day "Hood Feminism"

Image
Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women that a Movement Forgot    Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues.    All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. That feminists refuse to prioritize these issues has only exacerbated the age-old problem of both internecine discord and women who rebuff at carrying the title.    Moreover, prominent white feminists broadly suffer from their own myopia with regard to how things like race, class, sexual orientation, and ability intersect with gender.    How can we stand in solidarity as a movement, Kendall asks, when there is the distinct likelihood that some women are oppre...

Book of the Day "Who Wrote the Bible?"

Image
Who Wrote the Bible?    For thousands of years, the prophet Moses was regarded as the sole author of the first five books of the Bible, known as the Pentateuch. According to tradition, Moses was divinely directed to write down foundational events in the history of the world: the creation of humans, the worldwide flood, the laws as they were handed down at Mt. Sinai, and the cycle of Israel’s enslavement and liberation from Egypt.    However, these stories—and their frequent discrepancies—provoke questions: why does the first chapter in Genesis say that man and woman were made in God’s image, while the second says that woman was made from man’s rib? Why does one account of the flood say it lasted forty days, while another records no less than one hundred? And why do some stories reflect the history of southern Judah, while others seem sourced from northern Israel?    Originally published in 1987, Richard Friedman’s Who Wrote the Bible? joins a ho...

Book of the Day "The Bible Unearthed"

Image
The Bible Unearthed: Archaeology's New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin of Its Sacred Texts    In this groundbreaking work that sets apart fact and legend, authors Finkelstein and Silberman use significant archaeological discoveries to provide historical information about biblical Israel and its neighbors.    In this iconoclastic and provocative work, leading scholars Israel Finkelstein and Neil Asher Silberman draw on recent archaeological research to present a dramatically revised portrait of ancient Israel and its neighbors. They argue that crucial evidence (or a telling lack of evidence) at digs in Israel, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon suggests that many of the most famous stories in the Bible—the wanderings of the patriarchs, the Exodus from Egypt, Joshua’s conquest of Canaan, and David and Solomon’s vast empire—reflect the world of the later authors rather than actual historical facts.    Challenging the fundamentalist readings of the script...

Pastor Steals Money From Needy Kids Program and Buys Bentley

Image
The church is the biggest scam of all time,  and it's still working!!! Especially in the black community. It's like black people can't wait to give their money to the church on Sunday, despite my best efforts to expose the con that religion is. Any pastor that has studied the christian religion must therefore know that it is not based on fact, which makes them ALL fraudsters! Don't take my word for it, look at the way these pastors behave!    One Chicago pastor is being accused of stealing close to $1,000,000 from his church’s food program designated for needy children. He used the money for his lavish gifts instead, one of which being a brand new Bentley.  The Chicago Tribune has reported that one of those gifts was a $142,000 Bentley luxury sedan.    According to federal prosecutors on the case, Rev. Clarence Smith Jr., of New Life Impact Church for many years, was indicted on fraud charges for taking more than $900,000 from the federally...
